Today, on our blog, we are going to discuss the top five causes of accidents. Unfortunately, car accidents still occur regularly due to things both within and out of our control. If you are recently the victim of a car accident and your car needs repair, bring it to our body shop, or consider buying a new car from our dealerships. Visit our website to learn more.
Top 5 Causes of Accidents
There are a lot of situations that can cause an accident. Some of those things are within our control and many of them are not. Keep reading to learn how we can all do our part to reduce the number of accidents that occur on the road.
We all have been distracted while driving. It’s something that can in many cases, not be helped. Our stereo stops working, a sign on the side of the road catches our eye, and our phone rings — are all distractions that can happen to anyone. However, sending a text or looking at our phones while driving, doing hygiene-related tasks, and other related actions are all distractions we can help. Whenever you happen to be distracted by something or you are tempted to send a text while driving, remember that the road is the most important thing happening right now — and an accident isn’t worth it.
Speeding & Reckless Driving
Everyone makes mistakes while driving and if we receive the brunt of someone else’s mistake (i.e. being cut off, stuck behind a slow driver, etc.), it is easy to feel angry, speed up, and perhaps drive recklessly. Though most would admit to feeling road rage from time to time, before you act on it, take a deep breath — or a couple of deep breaths — and remember the potential cost of road rage, and ask if it’s worth it.
Drunk driving is never an option — period. With Uber, Lyft, and other driving services, as well as available friends and family, it is easy to find an alternative to driving while intoxicated. Before going out, make a plan as to how you will get home. If you are going out with friends, ask them about potentially getting a ride with them or sharing a Uber or Lyft ride with them.
Rainy & Snowy Conditions
One of the reasons why we love living in Colorado is the seasons. However, with fall and winter come more dangerous road conditions, which can make it easy to get into an accident even if you’ve done everything in your power to prevent it. Before the rainy and snowy season comes, be sure to perform fall maintenance, or bring it into our service center to make sure your car is ready for the weather. Some of the most important things to do is check your tires to make sure you will have enough traction when the roads get slick and your wipers to make sure you can see no matter the conditions.
Running Red Lights & Stop Signs
Other main culprits of accidents are distracted drivers running red lights and drivers not obeying the rules of stop signs. As we mentioned earlier in our blog post, it is crucial that you have your full attention on the road and what’s going on around you. Additionally, when at stop signs, be sure to communicate with other drivers when it’s unclear about who is to proceed next, and be patient with other drivers.
